Live at Gwinnett Center for AAAAA Final Four: Milton Girls vs. Redan and Milton Boys vs. Westlake
After last week's incredibly successful live blog, the Beacon has sent me on the road again, but this time, i don't have to travel all the way to West Georgia. And in case you're wondering, yes I double billed them for the gas mileage to Carrollton.
Tonight, I'm live at the Arena at the Gwinnett Center for coverage of the GHSA AAAAA Final Four. The Milton girls tip off against Redan at 7 p.m. The Milton boys follow at 8:30 with a game against Westlake.
To further your enjoyment of this live blog, I've brought my best friend, Beacon correspondent Tim Altork along too. Also on hand is our ace photographer Ken McCorkle.
Anyway, for the second week in a row, I'll keep you updated with live updates of tonight's events.
6:36 p.m.: Tim and I just ran into former Milton girls basketball coach Kim Coleman. Coleman might be the most excited guy in the building right now (which is saying a lot because the Central Gwinnett student section has already rendered me deaf in one ear). Coleman coached many of the girls that are slated to play in tonight's game for Milton. Plus, his son Chase is a member of the boys varsity team.
6:57 p.m.: This just in, the Milton girls game will not be starting at 7 p.m. At 6:51 p.m., Central Gwinnett decided to mount a furious final minute rally, they tied Westlake with a long 3-pointer with less than 15 seconds left in regulation. Boys state semifinal number one is headed to overtime, tied at 61.
7:11 p.m.: The overtime that will never end finally ended. Somehow Westlake and Central Gwinnett managed to stretch a five minute OT period into 30 minutes (at least that's what it felt like). Westlake won which means their headed to tomorrow's state championship game.
7:16 p.m.: There's a rumor going around the gym that Redan hasn't lost since Eisenhower was president. This is not true. Yes, the team has won 57 in a row, but that streak only dates back to the administration of George W. Bush. Redan last lost on March 7, 2008 in the state championship game.
7:20 p.m.: Redan is warming up right in front of me. For those of you wondering, their team nickname is the Lady Raiders. Tonight's fun fact that bodes well for the Lady Eagles: Milton is 3-0 against teams called the Lady Raiders. The team's have no common opponents. As a matter of fact, I don't even think they have a common opponent's opponent.
7:26 p.m.: Altork and I are going to make predictions. First, Tim is showing off his blatant hatred for all things Milton by predicting a 64-52 Redan win. On the other hand, John Milton is my favorite author, Eagles are my favorite animal and red is my favorite color, I'll take Milton 61-57 in the upset.
7:38 p.m.:Redan has averaged 61 points per game in the playoffs. After four minutes, they have four. Milton trails 4-2 with 3:42 left in first.
7:45 p.m.: Milton's defense is on Redan like white on coconut shavings. Redan not able to get near the basket. Lady Eagles up 9-6 after one.
7:50 p.m.: Milton coach Craig Bennett just called a 30-second timeout which gives me 27-seconds to tell you that Kris Puthoff-king is leading the way with four points so far for Milton. Lady Eagles up 11-6 with 5:23 left in first half.
8:01 p.m.: Put the kids to bed, order some pizza and get in front of the computer because we have a great game going on here. With one half in the books, Redan is up 19-17 after MacKenzie Dalrymple hits a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the half.
8:04 p.m.: If my stat book isn't lying (and it never does) Milton might be in some big trouble heading into the second half. Nikki Dixon, the all-everything guard for the Lady Eagles, has four fouls. Tori Waldner is also in foul trouble with three. Puthoff-King still leads Milton in scoring with six points, Dixon has three. Dixon also has two rebounds, three assists and two steals. She picked up her third foul with 1:05 left in the half, Bennett decided to leave her in and 30 seconds later she was called for a charge. Milton's seventh man Melanie Clinton is going to have to come up big with Dixon in foul trouble. Redan's 4'9" little ball of energy Alisha Andrews has five points, while Aneesah Daniels has six points leading her team.
8:16 p.m.: With Dixon on the bench, Milton has somehow managed to outscore Redan 6-3 so far. Lady Eagles up 23-22 with 5:40 left in the third.
8:21 p.m.: Maybe Dixon's fouls inspired Milton, maybe its the fact that it's 48 degrees in the Gwinnett arena, whatever it is, the Lady Eagles are still holding off Redan. Milton up 29-24 with 3:31 left.
8:24 p.m.: We need some water in the gym because Kierra Page just caught fire. Five straight points by Redan's Page ties the game up at 29 with 2:01 left in third.
8:31 p.m.: Nikki Dixon back in for the fourth. Redan's Andrews hit a three at the end of the third that put the Lady Raiders up 36-31 after three.
8:35 p.m.: Andrews with another big 3-pointer, the 4'9" Redan star can not miss. After two Tori Waldner free throws, Milton is trailing 40-35 with 6:30 left in fourth.
8:38 p.m.: Redan currently on a 13-5 run. Milton fans need a spark or an energy bar. Lady Eagles need a big shot soon. Lady Raiders up 44-35 with 5:32 left.
8:43 p.m.: Milton calls a timeout, Craig Bennett trying to put together game plan that can overcome a nine point deficit in 4:43. Lady Eagles trail 46-37, Redan ball.
8:48 p.m.: Milton down to their last timeout. Kris Puthoff-King, the only senior starter on the Milton roster isn't going down without a fight. She has six fourth quarter points, Milton trails 50-44 with 2:31 left.
8:52 p.m.: Dixon fouls out of the game, Milton needs call the basketball version of the hail mary. Redan at the free throw line, up 52-46 with 1:04 to play.
8:55 p.m.: The amazing Redan winning streak continues. It might last the Obama administration. The Lady Raiders have now won 58 in a row after knocking off Milton 55-46. Kris Puthoff-King, in her final game at Milton, led the Lady Eagles with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Tori Waldner had eight points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. The star of the game though was Polly Pocket herself; Alisha Andrews. The 4'9" Redan guard scored a team high 17 points, she also had three rebounds and five steals. Kierra Paige was also an offensive force for Redan as the junior scored 15 points while dishing out five assists. Milton ends the season 22-6. The boys game is set for a 9:10 p.m. tip off.
9:09 p.m.: Tim picked the winner of the girl's game, so I owe him Taco Bell. Altork thinks Milton walks to a win 70-58. I, on the other hand, think it will be a 10-point game, 75-65 Milton. Game will tip off as soon as the announcer lets us know that he knows who the starters for both teams are.
9:18 p.m.: When I said I thought Milton would win by 10, they must have been insulted because three minutes into the game, they're already up 10, 12-2 with 4:51 left in first.
9:26 p.m.: If Milton's goal is to score 100 points tonight, they're on a great pace. After one quarter of play, the Eagles are up on Newton 23-12. Evan Nolte sets up camp behind the 3-point line and nails three from downtown for nine points in the quarter.
9:33 p.m.: Newton just called a timeout, chances are, their coach is telling them 'I know its only the second quarter, but great season guys.' Milton up 35-19 with 3:43 left in the first half.
9:40 p.m.: The Harlem Globetrotters are supposed to be at Gwinnett Arena Saturday, well, I'm pretty sure they can just go ahead and cancel that because Milton put on a show in the first half and they lead 46-26. Nolte has 15 points, Shannon Scott has 10 while Julian Royal and Dai Jon Parker each have nine.
9:45 p.m.: People are actually leaving at halftime. I think I can safely say that this is the first time I have ever seen that happen at a state semifinal.
9:59 p.m.: Newton calls a timeout and I think they're waving a white flag, wait, no, that's only a towel. Milton up 65-37 with 1:27 left in third.
10:03 p.m.: If you have a big day tomorrow, feel free to go too bed, I think Milton has this one in the bag. After three quarters in the state semifinal, Milton is up on Newton 67-43.
10:15 p.m.: Milton just called a 30-second time out, I'm assuming the team needs the rest because they are tired of scoring. Eagles up 83-50 with 2:23 left.
10:21 p.m.: Ladies and gentleman, Milton will be playing for a state championship tomorrow after whitewashing Newton 86-54.
